MyData 4 Children workshop 18 November 2021

Envisioning the best digital futures for children, guardians & their circle of trust

November 18, 2021
14:30 – 16:30 CET
Session with children: 14:45 – 15:25 CET

Online session.  For those in Amsterdam, there will be a set-up for you to join.

MyData4Children is delighted to invite you to voice what type of digital future you would like for your children, for your family and for your community.

Please note that we want children, parents, and all those serving them to participate!

What is this about?

We want to enable the key stakeholders (children, guardians, circle of trust) to imagine & share what their ideal digital future looks like.  Those insights will help MyData community to understand how MyData principles can help in creating digital solutions that are safe, empowering and inspiring for children. We also want to share what we learn with other organisations who are working with children’s digital rights.

What does it mean to participate?

We are looking for teams of a child & grownup in order to get insights that generate from the experience of families as they navigate their digital worlds.

*If you don’t have a child, you are of course welcomed!

We need you to ideate how to transform the children’s insights into real-world solutions.

How will the workshop with children look like?

This is a hands-on session to visualise the best possible digital experiences, from the perspective of the child and the resulting reflections of the participating adults.

The parents, guardians and experts are welcomed to join the 2-hour session (14:30 – 16:30 CET), while the children join only for the children part (14.45 – 15.25 CET).  Teenagers are welcomed to stay for the whole session if they wish to.

The workshop language is English.  Nonetheless, you can work with your child in your own language.

For the children’s session, parents and guardians will act as the local facilitators, meaning translating if needed, asking questions, listening to the child’s opinion, and documenting their thoughts and ideas.  Children are the experts in this session.

MyData4Children team of facilitators will guide through the process and prepare the tools for a smooth session.   We will use Miro boards as a tool.  We share an example of the board each team (child + parent/guardian) will have:

How should I prepare?

Please explain the workshop to your child and the importance of their participation.  Have your child’s main digital device at hand for the workshop, as one of the exercises is that the child walks you through their digital experience and explains what they like and what they don’t.

DATA POLICY

In order to ensure the privacy of children and their data, we follow these protocols:

Children personal data

  • We do not ask for the name of the child at any moment.  During the workshop, each child will choose an avatar image as representation.
  • We do ask the age of the child as it is needed to place the child in the correct working group during the session.  This information is also important for the insights analysis in order to understand the different experiences according to age.
  • The data and information generated during the workshop will be managed and used for research purposes by MyData4Children working group.  A report and/or presentation will be produced with key insights.  No references to specific children will be made.
  • If you give consent, we may include some images of your working boards from the workshop in upcoming presentations and publications.
  • If you change your mind later on, you may withdraw your consent by sending a message to paula.bello (at) mydata.org

Recordings

  • The session with children WILL NOT be recorded.
  • The following parts will be recorded, unless someone in the group objects.  The group will be asked for permission to record before each section starts:
    • Introduction
    • Discussion & analysis
    • Conclusions
